🎯 Seminar Focus

“Trust-Building Strategies When Assisting People Who Use Drugs Facing Criminal Charges”

Join leading legal experts, human rights advocates, medical professionals, and civil society leaders from across Asia for a timely roundtable discussion on enhancing fair trial rights for people who use drugs (PWUDs).

This event marks the first in the 2025 Asia Fair Trial Practices Roundtable Series, hosted by the Centre for Law and Transformative Change (CLTC), BABSEACLE, and the International Drug Policy Consortium (IDPC). It explores how trust can be rebuilt between marginalised communities and justice systems—moving beyond punitive responses toward holistic, rights-based approaches.

🧭 Objectives

  • Examine international legal standards protecting PWUDs’ fair trial rights (ICCPR, UNCAT, etc.)
  • Analyse common procedural violations in drug-related trials
  • Share best practices for legal representation, transparency, and stigma reduction
  • Facilitate breakout discussions with legal and health professionals
  • Develop actionable practice tips for defence lawyers and advocates

📌 Breakout Sessions Include:

  1. Understanding Drug Users’ Experiences in Criminal Trials
  2. Overcoming Stigma and Bias in Drug-Related Court Cases
  3. Challenging Procedural Irregularities to Build Trust

Each session will yield practical recommendations aimed at reinforcing procedural fairness and institutional trust.
